BHEL & Hitachi Energy Win ₹12,000 Cr Deal for India’s Largest Private Power Transmission Project

​In a landmark development for India's energy infrastructure, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Hitachi Energy India have secured a contract to develop the nation's largest private-sector power transmission project, valued at approximately ₹12,000 crore. This ambitious initiative, commissioned by Adani Energy Solutions, aims to enhance the transmission of renewable energy across key regions.​

Project Overview: Bridging Renewable Energy Across States

The project involves the design and implementation of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) terminals that will facilitate the transfer of renewable energy from Bhadla in Rajasthan—a prominent renewable energy hub—to Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, an industrial and transportation center. The HVDC link is designed to transmit up to 6,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity over a distance of approximately 950 kilometers, with the potential to power around 60 million households.​

Collaborative Efforts and Technological Components

Under this collaboration, Hitachi Energy India and BHEL will jointly supply critical components for the HVDC system, including:​

  • Converter Transformers: Essential for converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and vice versa.​
  • AC/DC Control and Protection Systems: Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the transmission link.​
  • Thyristor Valves: Key elements in controlling the flow of electricity within the HVDC system.​
  • 765 kV/400 kV Grid Connections: Facilitate integration with the existing power grid infrastructure.​
  • Auxiliary Systems: Support the overall functionality and reliability of the transmission network.​

Strategic Importance and Future Implications

This project represents BHEL's fourth venture into HVDC systems, underscoring its growing expertise in advanced power transmission technologies. The initiative is part of a broader transmission system aimed at evacuating power from renewable energy zones in Rajasthan, specifically under Phase-III Part I, awarded to Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions.​

The successful execution of this project is poised to significantly bolster India's renewable energy infrastructure, facilitating the efficient distribution of green power across state lines and contributing to the nation's sustainable development goals.​
