UK Approves Major Offshore Windfarm Project to Power 1 Million Homes by 2030

In a significant step toward achieving its clean energy ambitions, the UK government has officially approved the expansion of the Rampion offshore wind farm, a major green energy project located off the Sussex coast. The initiative, known as Rampion 2, is set to generate up to 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of clean electricity — enough to power approximately one million British homes.
Rampion 2: A Beacon for Clean Energy Future
The expansion plan includes the installation of 90 additional wind turbines, making Rampion 2 one of the largest offshore wind projects in the region. Construction is scheduled to begin next year and is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs during its development phase — providing a much-needed boost to the local and national green economy.
This approval marks a crucial milestone in the UK’s journey toward a low-carbon energy system. Once operational, Rampion 2 could provide nearly 75% of Sussex’s total electricity demand, further reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing energy security.
A Delayed but Determined Green Light
Originally slated for a government decision in February 2025, the project’s approval was briefly delayed due to additional information requests from the developer, RWE, and local consultations. Concerns from nearby communities, particularly regarding the project’s potential impact on tourism, were taken into account during the planning process.
However, after extensive review and adjustments to address these concerns, the green light has now been given, reflecting a broader national commitment to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
Government’s Clean Energy Vision
UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the strategic importance of renewable energy in the current global landscape.
“The UK has a boundless supply of wind that cannot be turned on and off at the whims of dictators and petrostates,” Miliband stated. “It’s time to get off the fossil fuel rollercoaster, roll out clean power, protect our energy security and bring down bills for good.”
The Rampion 2 project is part of a larger, ambitious agenda from the current government, which came to power in July last year. Since then, it has approved clean energy projects that together have the potential to power 1.8 million homes. The national plan includes:
- Doubling the UK’s onshore wind capacity
- Tripling its solar power capacity
- Quadrupling its offshore wind generation
- Reducing gas-based electricity to just 5% of the national grid by 2030
“This project puts us within reach of our clean power offshore wind target,” Miliband added. “Through our plan for change, we’re delivering the clean energy and jobs Britain needs.”
Community Collaboration at the Core
Project leader Umair Patel expressed gratitude to the local Sussex community, whose input helped shape the final proposal.
“We would like to thank the Sussex community for their input over the past four years,” Patel said. “Their feedback helped us refine and adapt the project to better serve the environment and the people who live here.”
He also noted that Rampion 2 will not only bring clean energy but long-term benefits in the form of employment and local investment throughout both construction and operational phases.
